My painting practice continues to be materials and process driven, exploring possibilities inherent in experimenting with acrylics and mixed media on canvas. The subject of my painting is the process of painting itself. I use intuitive expressive mark making that incorporates layering, glazing, overpainting, wiping, smearing, scratching, dripping, collaging and relief effects. I like to contrast areas of translucent colour with heavier impasto effects. Each mark acts as a conduit to the next. I risk failure with every mark, every move. In 2017 I also undertook a rigorous form of self-editing by painting over paintings that I didn’t feel were successful. This was liberating and led to producing work that I was more satisfied with. An element of each new painting contained small areas that reflected aspects or the ghost of the previous painting, resulting in a palimpsest of gestural marks as personal as my handwriting.
