The subject of my painting practice continues to be the process of painting itself, of obscuring and then revealing through multiple glazes. Each painting undergoes a lengthy, often torturous journey to its final destination. My painting reflects my fascination with gestural mark making, layering, exploring colour possibilities, and engaging with the visceral materiality of acrylics and gels. I apply painterly marks in an instinctive way, working quickly wet on wet and striving for emotive, expressive effects that are suggestive, but enigmatic. I am using gestural abstraction to evoke a sense of possibility, of potential, even mystery, of something that is beyond verbal. I have been challenging myself to create artworks without brushes, using found tools.
